he asks me how to spell loneliness and i want to tell him
my name
it's cold outside, tonight. i always thought the wind only
bit through your bones in books. tonight even the stars
are sharp, the moon a scimitar, staring squarely down: confess,
tonight, i already know
your secrets. silver shines through the grass, the trees, the
water, separation gnaws at me with renewed frost. i'm a dragon, look!
exhaling mist into the dew. water, water, wither roots? the wicker creaks
as i lean back, and a cricket is startled into silence for a while. i can hear him watchful
tense, maybe, until the silence is reaffirmed. nightsong. i
am waiting for the blade to fall, offering my silent white neck to the moon
bared, djinn kisses.

salt tears splash
onto the pale concrete, but briefly. there are no ivory
knights in the starlight, only a lone whirring violin answering my midnight call.

what a hateful winter this is turning out to be. what a horrible november. december doesn't look good either. december is always bakwas. i hate everyone except for ali smulli, who loves me all the time, not when it's convenient.

'i'm sad' she says
he spells it 'unhappyness' (some
howsuddenly it looks lovelier
that way)

and presently the phone
rings-

i love you
